From the research I have found, the best defense for eye health are antioxidants. It is believed that much of the damage done to the optic nerve is from free radicals. The anitoxidant I can find most important for eye health is Alpha-Lipoic Acid (ALA). And actually, red meat is a rich source of ALA. You also get ALA from blueberries and red wine. This is a special antioxidant because of its versatility. It helps to deactivate an unusally wide array of cell-damaging free radicals in many bodily systems. It also helps to “recycle” vitamins C and E and other antioxidants, enabling them to more effectively do their jobs.

The amino acid that is especially important for eye health is Glutathione. There are many potential benefits from this amino acid, including improving the immune system, but numerous studies link glutathione with the prevention of cataracts, glaucoma, retinal disease, and diabetic blindness. Foods that increase glutathione levels include sulfar-rich foods such as garlic, eggs, asparagus, and onions and glutathione-rich foods such as watermelon, asparagus, and grapefruits.
