Is there a direct correlation between being overweight and cancer?

 

 Research says yes. Our collective waistlines have rapidly expanded and this has made obesity-related cancer much more prevalent.

 

It’s not fully understood why excess body fat increases your risk of cancer. But, according to the Mayo Clinic, several leading theories are related:

 

·        Insulin– Body fat isn’t just storage space for excess energy. It’s a metabolically active substance that can have far-reaching effects on your body chemistry (particularly when it comes to hormones). Insulin, which is produced by the pancreas, is one such hormone.

 

Simply put, obesity and inactivity generally lead to higher levels of insulin circulating in your blood. Excess insulin is believed to fuel growth of cancer cells. In addition, it increases circulating levels of other hormones that likely play a role in cancer development and growth.

 

 

·        Immune system—Excess fat is thought to release proteins that may suppress the immune system and increase inflammation, both of which may play a role in cancer development and progression.

 

·        Poor food choices and less exercise – Eating a high-fat diet, particularly one with high amounts of red meat or processed meat, and being sedentary may contribute to cancer risk.

What people don’t realize is that when we consume more than 600 calories at a meal, our body cannot handle the extra calories and stores the excess as fat. So that all-you-can-eat buffet is a killer. Smaller meals, at least 1 1/2 – 2 hours in between to allow the digestive system a break is the best way to stay healthy and to keep those extra pounds off! And DON’T forget the exercise!
